In memory of Alexander Ivanovich Astakhov

On July 3, 2007, at the age of 76, the life of the famous Russian scientist-breeder, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Honored Worker of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, Alexander Ivanovich Astakhov, was cut short.

Alexander Ivanovich Astakhov was born on December 11, 1931 in the village of Selechnya, Sevsky district, Bryansk region, into a large peasant family. Having graduated with honors from 7 classes and then from a vocational school, in 1951 he began his career as a factory worker. After graduating from the Working Youth School in 1954 with a silver medal, he entered the Voronezh Agricultural Institute (Voronezh Agricultural Institute), from which he graduated in 1959, receiving a diploma with honors.

In 1959-1962 he worked on a state farm, at the Lipetsk state variety plot. In 1962, A.I. Astakhov entered graduate school at the Voronezh Agricultural Institute and in 1966 defended his thesis on the patterns of inheritance of biochemical traits in plums.

Since 1969, all of Alexander Ivanovich’s scientific activities have been connected with the Bryansk region. He worked as a senior researcher at the Bryansk Agricultural Experimental Station (now the All-Russian Research Institute of Lupine), head of the horticulture department (1970-1987), and since 1987 - leading researcher at the fruit growing department.

Scientific research by A.I. Astakhov were associated with the optimization of the breeding process of fruit crops, the use of biometric methods in breeding, private genetics and the theory of selection. Based on the results of the research, more than 60 scientific papers were published. In 1995, for a set of works on the selection of fruit and berry plants using biometric methods, he was awarded the academic degree of Doctor of Agricultural Sciences.

A.I. Astakhov is the author and co-author of 26 varieties of fruit and berry crops, of which 20 are included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements approved for use in the Russian Federation. A particularly large contribution to domestic selection was made by A.I. Astakhov for black currants. He created 12 original varieties of this crop (Selechenskaya, Gulliver, Dobrynya, Nara, Perun, Sevchanka, Litvinovskaya, etc.), which became widely known and recognized in Russia and abroad.

Alexander Ivanovich was a man with philosophical thinking, who had extensive and deep knowledge in genetics, selection, physiology, biochemistry and other scientific disciplines. All this allowed him to clearly build a strategy and tactics for his research and realistically predict the future of his scientific endeavors.

A.I. Astakhov was distinguished by his rare diligence, high intelligence, and goodwill towards people. Being a modest, conscientious and even shy man, he, however, knew how to assertively and with incorruptible integrity defend his convictions. All this earned him high authority and deep respect among fellow breeders and work colleagues.

Alexander Ivanovich was a multi-talented person, the circle of his life interests was not limited only to scientific problems. He understood and loved music and painting, was fond of poetry, and wrote a little poetry himself. This was a man fascinated by nature, his chosen profession, in which he sought and found joyful satisfaction from his stay in this world. He selflessly loved his small homeland - the Bryansk region, in whose honor he named a number of wonderful varieties of currants (Sevchanka, Selechenskaya, Nara, Bryansk partisan).

By a happy coincidence, I have been living and working for about 40 years near the institution where A.I. worked with passion and talent. Astakhov together with his wife Maina Vladimirovna Kanshina, a famous cherry breeder, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences. Over the years, good, friendly and creative relations have developed between us, the essence of which I once expressed in poetry:

I'm proud that I work next to you,

The life of Alexander Ivanovich Astakhov was cut short at the height of his scientific activity, when he was full of new plans and creative insights.

In the history of domestic selection of fruit plants, Alexander Ivanovich Astakhov will undoubtedly remain a major innovating scientist. His theoretical developments and practical contribution to the selection of fruit crops are a valuable scientific heritage worthy of careful treatment and further development. This will be the best memory of a talented scientist-breeder, a true patriot of Russia, who devoted his life to a life-affirming goal - the prosperity of domestic gardening.
