Today, more than ever, handmade decorative souvenirs are in demand. A wide variety of creative arts are used for this purpose. One of the most popular recently is scrapbooking, which uses scrap paper: special, regular, cardboard, wallpaper or unusual designs that can be printed on any color printer. The material turns ordinary things into real works of art: photo albums, diaries, photo frames or postcards, collages and other crafts.

What is scrap paper

For decades now, this type of handicraft known as scrapbooking has existed. Today this technique is used not only when decorating albums, but also other items. All this became possible thanks to the main material – scrap paper, which is presented in a huge variety. The popularity of the material is determined not only by its unusual appearance or variety of textures, but also by its quality, which will protect crafts from fading and yellowing for a long time.

Features and types

The main difference between scrapbooking paper is the absence of lignin and acid. High-quality materials will remain in their original form for a long time. The oxidation process of lignin gives yellowness, as a result of which the product loses its decorative appearance. A striking example is tracing paper or old newspapers that turn yellow over time. The composition of the paper must be indicated on the packaging. There are certain styles of scrapbooking paper:

  1. vintage;
  2. shabby chic;
  3. retro;
  4. steampunk;
  5. American style;
  6. grunge;
  7. boho;
  8. ecostyle;
  9. mixed media.

To make postcards, design photo albums, diaries, boxes or other crafts, it is important to choose the right type of paper. In this case, the work will look more interesting. There are several types of paper for scrapbooking:

  • thin and dense;
  • two-sided and one-sided;
  • curly;
  • smooth and textured;
  • with foil;
  • with velvet coating;
  • matte and glossy (with shine or “glitter”).

How to use

Beautiful scrapbooking paper is used not only for creating traditional compositions. There are many special techniques, combining which you can realize the most unusual ideas. Here are options for using paper for scrapbooking:

  1. Stamping. Rubber or silicone stamps and ink are used. By alternating them on paper, original prints are obtained.
  2. Distress. The technique artificially ages the paper.
  3. A combination of techniques with quilling, embroidery, etc.
  4. Journaling. Scrapbooking sheets are combined with text: printed or handwritten.

Scrap paper crafts

Using the simplest tools (glue, paper, base, etc.) you can create unusual crafts. In addition to the common photo albums and photo frames, postcards (cardmaking), diaries, book covers, gift boxes or ordinary boxes are often decorated. Beautiful scrapbooking sheets will turn an ordinary item into a masterpiece. By adding print, braid, lace, leather, even newspaper, an old, unwanted shoebox can be transformed into a useful storage container for small items.

Scrap paper price

You can buy paper for scrapbooking in the Moscow region through an online store, in a specialized store, order by mail, or visit a scrap bazaar. The price will depend on the quality of paper, size, number of sheets in the set. The price range is as follows:

Type of paper

Cost (RUB)

Sheet 29.5x29.5cm 1 piece

28–36 rubles

Die-cut paper 30.5x30.5cm 1 piece 03

Bunnies & Kids Set, 305x305mm

Sheets Silk Studio, set 15x15cm 24l

Poker set, A4

Set of multi-colored mother-of-pearl, A4

Set Mister, A4

The price of paper decreases significantly when there is a promotion or a sale. Such events often take place not only in Moscow; St. Petersburg is no exception. Shopping for decorative materials can be very enjoyable when it works good discount. If there is home delivery, you definitely need to clarify its conditions: it is quite possible that the sale can only be carried out if a certain number of sets are purchased.

DIY scrapbooking paper

You can often hear that many craftsmen make their own paper. Appearance The material will not be inferior to paper purchased in a store, but the savings are significant. To make it yourself, you will need:

  • colored cardboard or thick paper base (if source material one-sided, then the resulting scrapbooking sheets will be the same);
  • paper napkins with interesting designs;
  • iron;
  • container with water and water sprayer;
  • scissors;
  • candle or lighter;
  • old newspapers or magazines;
  • cling film.

From wallpaper

There are many ways to make scrap paper at home. One of the common ones is obtaining material from wallpaper. This option is suitable for working with it as a base by gluing other decorative elements onto it. Wallpaper with any motifs is suitable: floral, plant, animal, striped, with ornaments, textured. Such options can be used not as a background, but as the main elements (some craftsmen do not cut out pieces, but tear them off).

From napkins

In order to get interesting and textured scrap paper from napkins, you will not need many tools. You will need: napkins (their price is much less than scrap paper), PVA glue, soft brush, water, paper towels, A4 sheets. The manufacturing sequence is as follows:

  1. The napkin is laid out on a white sheet.
  2. Using glue and a brush, glue the napkin to the paper. It is better to dilute the glue with water.
  3. Lightly flatten the napkin.

The second method of making scrap paper from napkins gives a more interesting surface. Everything takes a little longer. The manufacturing sequence is as follows:

  1. Wrinkle two napkins and soak them in water.
  2. Straighten one and lay it out on a regular sheet. Remove excess moisture with a paper towel.
  3. Glue it onto the sheet.
  4. From the second napkin you need to make small flagella and balls (for this you need to tear the napkin into pieces).
  5. Place everything on a whole napkin glued to the sheet.
  6. Coat everything with glue.
  7. Dry.

Printouts for scrapbooking

An interesting option for obtaining material is printing on a printer. The design of such artistic materials will look aesthetically pleasing. Prints for scrapbooking involve the use of any motifs. The only thing you need to remember is that if the design is printed using non-moisture resistant inks, you cannot subsequently use water. To create double-sided paper, printing must be on both sides. The basis can be ordinary paper materials, watercolor sheets, photo paper, cardboard.

How to age scrapbooking sheets

The simplest and quick way to add mystery and aristocracy to the work being produced - to artificially age the material. There are several ways to do this. They are as follows:

  • coffee or tea (the longer you keep the leaf in liquid, the more beautiful the color);
  • milk (the material is crushed, soaked in fatty milk and dried with an iron - this will give beautiful brown stains);
  • potassium permanganate solution (the principle is the same as when working with coffee or tea);
  • lemon juice (the principle is the same as with milk, just do not crush the leaf);
  • candle, lighter (burn the edges of the sheet or “brown” the middle).

How to choose scrap paper

In order to choose scrap paper, you should focus not only on cost - choose what is cheap or expensive, although price matters, but also know what criteria you should pay attention to. They are as follows: size, density, purpose. The latter determines where and by whom the material will be used. For example, when choosing materials for children's creativity, it is important to understand that very thick or large paper will be difficult for a child to handle.

Size

Scrapbooking materials are available in several sizes: 15x15, 20x20, 30x30. However, there are other formats: A4, A2, A3. The size must correspond to the product itself, for example, a photo album is 15x15, which means the material is selected the same. When choosing large formats, you should pay attention to the position of the picture and its compliance with the author’s idea.

Density

A sheet is considered thin in the range from 120 to 180 g/m2, dense - from 190 to 240 g/m2. Any materials are used in the work. It all depends on the purpose: for external decoration it is best to take a dense one. If you need to make landscape pages or a postcard, a thin one is more suitable. If scrap paper is needed for the cover, it must be glued to the base.

How to replace paper for scrapbooking

Instead of paper for scrapbooking, regular paper is quite suitable, which is additionally colored (looks interesting in pink tones), crumpled or decorated with unusual materials: foil, stamps, ornaments, with text. To make handmade gifts, rough or colored cardboard, velvet sheets, pieces of wallpaper, old newspapers or magazines are often used.

Video

Let me make a reservation right away - I don’t do scrap, but sometimes I have to make small cards or price tags for my products. Therefore, for those who are truly “in the subject” of scrapbooking, such paper will not be of interest. For beginners who are surprised by the prices of scrap goods, my method of obtaining “scrap” paper may be useful. In addition, it will definitely be useful for children's creativity - you simply will not find such cardboard for such a price! So let's begin...

So, the essence of the method is decoupage on paper. All sorts of things - simply glued on, or glued with film - are not suitable for obtaining more or less high-quality paper, because the napkin is glued with creases and sloppily.

We need: A4 paper of any thickness (I have cardboard), three-layer napkins, wide glue stick, acrylic varnish, brush, scissors.

Now a little theory. The napkin behaves differently when pulled in different directions. Simply put, if you start pulling it on one side, it will stretch a little, but on the other it will tear. Moreover, no matter how you stretch it, it tends to tear more readily in one direction. It's like in fabric: there is a thread. So let’s call the side along which the napkin does not stretch, but tears, the lobe side (photo below).

Before starting work, separate the colorful layer of the three-layer napkin and carefully tear it at the edge. Whichever side the gap goes on is the equity side.

Place the sheet of paper as in the photo - narrow side up. Next, place the napkin on a sheet of paper so that the long side of the napkin coincides with the long side of the sheet. Determine the future position of the drawing on the sheet. Here it is necessary to make a reservation that if the plan requires turning the drawing over, then turn it over. At the pasting stage, the direction of the grain can be compromised, although it is not advisable. Now, bending the napkin from above, thoroughly coat the paper with glue, but not all of it, but just a strip, 3-4 cm wide (twice the width of the adhesive surface of a pencil). Now carefully place the napkin: first in the middle, and then smoothly smooth it, simultaneously stretching it, towards the edges.

Lyrical digression.

And at this stage I realized that it was better to show it once than to try to describe this process). But it’s still not entirely clear to me how to make a video MK, and I didn’t really manage to show it in the photo ((. However, I think, once you do it once, it will become clear how to move your hands). The most important thing here is not to skimp on glue ( all areas must be coated), work in small sections and move from the middle to the edges.

As soon as this part of the sheet is pasted over, we throw over the napkin and apply glue to another 3-4 cm of the sheet. And so on - until the very end. The quality of the paper will ultimately depend on the thoroughness and accuracy of the manipulations performed. But in the future, experience will do its job).

So, the paper is pasted over. We turn it over, check whether the edges are covered and cut off everything unnecessary with sharp (!!!) scissors. If the plan requires it, then we decorate it reverse side the same or another napkin.

But it should be remembered that if only one side of the paper is pasted over, then when it dries, the napkin will shrink and the paper will “bend out”. Therefore, it is still better to paste over both sides. Before gluing the second side of the paper, iron it with a clean sheet of paper.

Here it must be said: the paper is, in principle, ready, but its surface is very vulnerable. Although it is quite suitable for many jobs (until recently I stopped at this stage). And then the idea came to me to cover the whole thing with acrylic varnish. And everything worked out! But, you need to take into account that the movements of the brush with varnish must be perpendicular to the fractional side! Otherwise, wrinkles will begin to form or the napkin will simply tear. Here a lot still depends on the quality of the napkin. For some, nothing helps at all).

BUT!!! If you use such cardboard/paper for scrap, then you need to pay attention to one thing. If the paper is varnished, then it will be practically impossible to glue anything to it with paper glue (PVA, glue stick, etc.). It is best to use double-sided tape in this case.

That's basically all. Usually I cut out tags like this on cardboard - price tags for my works in the store.

Simple, but cute))

Here they are on the other

2. UNIQUE TECHNIQUE FOR MANUFACTURING UNUSUAL PAPER FOR DESIGNING SCRAP CARDS AND SCRAP ALBUMS

Many scrapbookers have long adopted a unique paper design technique for their scrapbook creations, which is called monotype. This method allows you to create unique and very original drawings on a sheet of paper. Monotype is a technique for creating patterns and paintings on glass and then transferring the print onto paper or special fabric.

The whole process of paper decoration for scrapbooking using monotype it looks like this: a sketch of a design is made on a smooth glass surface using acrylic paint or gouaches. Then a scrap sheet is applied to this glass with a sketch of the design and pressed against the glass. The mirror image print will be very original and beautiful. The final appearance of the picture is affected by the force with which the paper is pressed against the glass, the speed at which it is lifted from the glass, and the direction in which the paper is pulled away. The print can be further developed using colored pencils and ink.

Now on store shelves you can find various paper napkins with interesting and unusual designs. These napkins can be used in scrapbooking. They make beautiful textured paper for DIY scrapbooking. I'll tell you how easy it is to do this without much expense.

Our DIY scrapbooking paper will work if you prepare the following:
- drawing paper - 1 sheet;
- napkin or fragment of a napkin - 1 pc.;
- saucer;
- a brush of medium softness and width;
- PVA glue;
- a little water.

1. Take PVA glue and shake well so that there are no lumps. Then pour a little glue into the saucer.

2.Then add a little water to the saucer with glue.

3.Using a brush, mix the glue and water well.

4.Now we take a napkin and carefully separate all the layers we don’t need. We leave only the top layer with the pattern. If you have a single-layer napkin, then you don’t need to separate anything.

5. Take a sheet of paper for drawing and place a napkin on it. Do not place the napkin very close to the edge, because... The napkin will stretch a little.

6.Take a brush. The brush should be of medium hardness and not thin. We wet it in the prepared mixture of glue and water. And we begin to slowly “glue” the napkin from the center to the edge. Do everything carefully: do not press the brush too hard and do not rub the brush in one place, as you may tear the napkin!
During “gluing”, wrinkles will form on the napkin - don’t be alarmed! Wrinkles will add texture to your future paper. Check whether the edges of the napkin are well adhered and whether there are any large bubbles (if there are bubbles, carefully push them out with a brush dipped in the prepared solution from the center to the edge).

7. As a result, your napkin should look something like this:

8.Now leave the work to dry thoroughly (preferably for a day). After the work has dried, put it under a press (preferably for a day), the surface must be even.

9.And now that the paper has dried and leveled, you can cut it and use it in your scrap works as a background or cut out individual elements for decoration.

10.The process itself does not take much time, so you can prepare a sufficient amount of paper in one go.
You can’t always afford to purchase designer or textured paper, because... The cost of such paper is sometimes very high. But handmade scrapbooking paper will always delight you with its uniqueness. In addition, you will save a lot, and your work will not look worse.

11. I hope that this MK was useful.
